Smart Roadster Concept Heading to 2011 Geneva Motor Show


    Remember the patent designs of a topless, two-seat Smart model that we first showed you back in December, 2010? Well, according to Carscoop sources, the drawings are of a concept speedster model that will make its world premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show on March 1.

    We also learned the concept is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels, and that while Smart's parent company Mercedes-Benz has no plans to create a production version of the speedster-like model, key styling cues such as the headlamp and grille designs will pass on to the next generation Smart cars like the new Fortwo and the upcoming 5-door variant.

Mercedes-Benz USA to Take Over Smart Distribution from Penske, Ditches Plans for Nissan Micra-Based Car

    Daimler is planning to end an agreement with Penske Automotive Group regarding the distribution rights of Smart cars in the United States and transfer all activities to Mercedes-Benz USA, starting from the end of the second quarter of 2011.

    "We are very excited about working toward integration of Smart into the MBUSA organization, and look forward to working with our dealer partners to exceed customer expectations for this unique vehicle," said Mercedes-Benz President and CEO, Ernst Lieb. "The addition of smart, combined with our Autohaus dealer initiative, will help us build upon the tremendous momentum the Mercedes-Benz brand has achieved here in the U.S."

    Penske began selling the Lilliputian Smart Fortwo in the USA as an independent distributor in January 2008, and partially thanks to sky rocketing gasoline prices at the time as well as the initial shock factor, the company managed to sell close to 25,000 units that year. However, sales plummeted the next two years dipping to 14,600 cars in 2009 and to less than 6,000 units in 2010.

    "Introducing the smart brand to the U.S. has been a unique opportunity for us," said Penske Automotive Group Chairman Roger Penske. "Over the last three years I've experienced the passion consumers express for the brand as we delivered over 45,000 vehicles. Aligning smart distribution with Daimler, as it is worldwide, is the logical next step for the smart brand in the U.S. This alignment will enable the smart brand to grow through the Mercedes-Benz dealership network and lead the way in conservation and meeting future fuel economy standards."

    The decision to break up with Penske also marks the end of the firm's plans to add a Nissan Micra-based model to Smart's U.S. lineup in late 2011.

    The company is readying its own five-door model (see our most recent scoop story here) using a new rear-wheel drive platform that is being currently developed in cooperation with the Renault-Nissan Group, but the four seat hatchback isn't expected for another two to three years.

How Cute: Smart Fortwo Says Hello Kitty to U.S. Buyers with Special Wraps


    Hopefully, most of our readers will agree that a Smart Fortwo is a far more suitable candidate for a 'Hello Kitty' makeover than a Ferrari 360 Modena [weep here]. Furthermore, unlike the custom Modena, the Fortwo Hello Kitty is an officially licensed product as Smart's US distributor, Penske Automotive and Sanrio, the owner of the 'Hello Kitty' brand, signed an agreement to add a series of car wrap designs featuring the popular feline to the carmaker's vehicle customization program.

    "This is the first time that Sanrio will offer a Hello Kitty car in the United States," said Janet Hsu, president of Sanrio Inc. "The modern, environmentally-friendly features of the smart fortwo combined with supercute Hello Kitty designs deliver an exciting offering that responds to the demands of our fans for special edition lifestyle products."

    The Smart Expressions program will offer buyers in the States a choice of three different full-body Hello Kitty designs, each with a selection of color schemes. In total, the company offers 22 full and partial wrap design and color combinations from which to choose.

    According to Smart, the Hello Kitty wrapped Fortwo cars will make an appearance at many Sanrio events this fall for the brand's 50th Anniversary.

Smart Sales Collapsing, Brand Learns Importance of Marketing


    Numbers for Smart's Lilliputian Fortwo are dismal here in the States: from 24,600 units in 2008, sales dipped to 14,600 cars in 2009 and are 60% down to date this year. Furthermore, only 8.1% of metro New York buyers would return to the brand, while San Francisco is marginally better at 19.8%. With virtually no marketing (that I can see), a transmission with quirks that have to be explained, and a $14,000 price tag, something clearly has to be done to rectify the misperceived city car brand.

    Penske Automotive Group, which runs Smart USA, will try to improve the situation by putting Smart "in front of the kinds of consumers who are apt to be interested. "As an armchair marketing guru, I'd say that should have been the goal from the get-go; right now, it seems that the brand was built on hyped interest from people who probably thought it was "cute for the wife" or "green" or something even more superficial.

    Oddly, Smart USA has just been taking customer orders instead of actually selling cars. To initiate some new tactics, the company has hired former Saturn general manager Jill Lajdziak.

    On the agenda is more print, film, and web-based advertising. Also, Smart's Street Team will be back to promote the product, give people test drives, and do size checks. After the Street Team pushed to introduce the brand, it was benched for no apparent reason.

    Until now, Smart USA appeared content with sitting back and resting on its European laurels. As we can see, that didn't work, so hop to it guys. After two years of US "sales", Smart will just now begin putting banners on car websites. Really...two years to establish internet marketing? I'm all for city cars in America, but this brand has been so mismanaged that any confidence I had in them is seriously waning. We'll see how their Fortwo electric buggy works out.

Smart Commemorates 10 Years of UK Sales with Special Edition Fortwo


    In celebration of 10 years of sales in the UK, Smart is launching a new exclusive model called the Fortwo "gb-10" edition, of which only 100 will be produced for the local market. The mix of models consists of 50 gasoline engine coupes, 10 gasoline cabrios, 30 diesel coupes and 10 diesel cabrios.

    All cars are finished in a silver metallic color with a special red design feature on the tridion safety cell, complemented by 15-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and third brake light from Brabus.

    Inside, the Fortwo "gb-10" editions are distinguished by the Rosso red heated leather seats while the use of leather extends to the door panels, kneepad and handbrake gaitor. The upper part of the dashboard is finished in contrasting black alcantara and the instrument surrounds in silver. Smart also added a 'gb-10' logo on the headrests.

    Prices for the new Smart Fortwo gb-10 edition start from £10,695 on-the-road.

For-Two-Play: Smart Tank Ready for Combat


    For those that find the standard Smart ForTwo too cute and feminine for their tastes, there's this awesome creation; a tanked-out version of Mercedes-Benz's Lilliputian sub3compact. Add a rotating turret with a built in projectile launcher and are you all set for combat. Too bad we don't have the 'Full Monty' on the car and its creator.

2011 Smart Fortwo Receives Minor Upgrades


    The Smart Fortwo is entering the 2011 model year with an almost invisible change here and there complemented by the introduction of more economical engines.

    In addition to the new range of available exterior colors that now include a matt finish and the availability of a red or blue colored soft-top for the cabrio models, the updated Fortwo gets fresh fabric and color options for the interior while the tridion safety cell is now optionally available in white.

    The optional LED daytime driving lights up front and newly designed 15 inch alloy wheels on the outside, along with the refreshed instrument dials, new audio and navigation systems, and an optional three-spoke leather steering wheel with cruise control function and a trip computer inside, complete the visual upgrades.

    Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz's engineers fine-tuned the Fortwo's engines lowering fuel consumption and C02 emissions. Thanks to the re-calibrated engine control unit and new exhaust system both the 60HP mhd and the 70HP mhd consume 4.2lt/100km (60mpg US) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 97g/km.

    The 62 kW / 83HP version consumes 4.9lt/100 km with CO2 emissions of 114 g/km, while the 40kW / 54HP cdi diesel now returns CO2 emissions of just 86g/km.

    Finally, the range-topping Brabus model receives a small boost in output, from 72 kW / 97HP to 75 kW / 101HP with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

    Smart added that in celebration of the introduction of the 2011MY Fortwo, it will launch a limited edition model called "Lightshine" that will be available in the new exterior colors matt light green or light blue metallic as a coupe and cabriolet with either a 52 kW mhd petrol engine, a 62 kW petrol engine or a 40kW cdi engine.
